PONTES POISED
TO SET NOJHL RECORD
June 3rd, 2009
Should star defenceman Chris
Pontes suit up for 32 games
for the Sudbury
Kal Tire Jr. Wolves during
the '09-10 season, he'll
reach a Northern
Ontario Jr. Hockey League
milestone.
The 1989 birth year
blueliner will surpass
former Soo Thunderbirds and
Abitibi Eskimos winger Matt
Brunet as the NOJHL's
all-time leader in
regular-season games played.
Currently, Pontes has played
in 193 regular-season games
and is fourth on
the all-time list.
Brunet played 224 games over
five NOJHL seasons followed
by former Blind
River Beavers and Manitoulin
Islanders tough guy Curtis
(Moose) Johnson
with 222 and erstwhile
Sudbury scoring star Brian
McGarry with 211.
Pontes, who has already
played in five NOJHL
seasons, would probably
already be the all-time
games leader if he hadn't
left the North Bay
Skyhawks 10 games into the
'05-06 season to return home
to Sudbury and
play high school hockey.
Pontes played 40 games with
North Bay in his '04-05
rookie season and then
10 more in '05-06 before
leaving the Skyhawks. He
joined the Jr. Wolves to
start the '06-07 season and
has played in 143 games for
them since.
In total, Pontes has 53
goals and 79 assists for 132
points in 193
regular-season games,
according to NOJHL historian
Dave Harrison.
For the record, Pontes has
played in another 52 playoff
games during his
NOJHL career.
